'Shararat' singer Madhubanti Bagchi on Bollywood's habit of typecasting singers, 'They put you in a box'
Madhubanti Bagchi says she avoided typecasting after the success of ‘Aaj Ki Raat, believing that actresses should establish their own identity. He feels that Bollywood should rely on more singers, not just Arijit Singh. His tracks “Jab Talak” and “Shararat” remain popular, and he shares recording insights with composer Pritam.

Madhubanti Bagchi says that after ‘Aaj Ki Raat’ became a hit, she made sure not to get stuck doing the same kind of songs, and felt that every artist should establish their own identity. He also thinks that Bollywood should employ more singers instead of putting in more work Arijit Singh alone.

Madhubanti Bagchi’s tracks continue to strike a chord

Even as Bagchi’s recent release, “Jab Talak” from ‘Cocktail 2’, continues to gain traction, old tracks like “Shararat” from ‘Dhurandhar’ (2025), along with some of his earlier songs, have also not lost their popularity. “It’s a satisfying feeling for sure,” he said at midday, opening up about the industry’s tendency to typecast artists and his efforts to protect his craft in a business that relies heavily on a select few voices.

Madhubanti Bagchi to say no to similar offers

Asked if he was flooded with offers for similar songs after the success of the track, and how difficult it was to avoid that trap, he said, “It’s not difficult to turn down such offers. The industry seems to put you in a box and then overuse it as much as possible until you do something else. Then they put you in another box. Before Aaj Ki Raat, my song was in Heeramandi [Nazariya Ki Maari] came and everyone saw me as a classical singer. When Aaj Ki Raat was released, people jumped from ‘He is a classical singer’ to ‘He sings dance numbers’. As artists, we need to think about the narrative we are going to set for the audience. Why I restrict myself to: [one genre]?”.

Madhubanti Bagchi to record Jab Talaq

How “Jab Talak” came about, he said, “Jab Talak was recorded after the film’s first teaser was dropped. I was happy with the way the female part was composed. Pritamda is a magician. Who would not want to work with him? It is a dream for any artist to sing a song composed by him.”
