Indian captain Shubman Gill was upset after his team lost the title by four wickets against England in the second ODI at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, Thursday, July 16, 2026.Having cruised to 180/3, India endured a collapse in the middle to be bowled out for 233, with England all out chasing well thanks to an unbeaten 99 from Joe Root, who completed one run after Gus Atkinson’s century. The win helped England level the three-match series 1-1.Reflecting on the collapse of India’s batting, Gill admitted that his side fell short of what they wanted.“Very disappointing, to be honest with you. We thought 300-310 would be good enough after 25 overs. We were in a good position, but we lost too many wickets in the middle overs. Our batsmen are not very good batsmen, but we expected a little from our middle order. Shubman Gill said after the match.
Gill reflects on Washington Sundar’s injury
Speaking about Washington Sundar’s injury, Gill admitted that it had disrupted India’s plans, although he stopped short of calling it a defeat.“He is a very important part of our team. I think he was injured when he was running to the middle. We had to throw our big bowls during the whole period and change our ways. It caused a little loss, but I don’t think it made a big difference because the ball was doing enough for the runners,” he added.
Root chased the target easily
India ruined their position after being asked to bat first at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff. Despite a strong stand of 114 runs between Virat Kohli (65) and Shreyas Iyer (66) which took the visitors to 180/3, a collapse in the middle saw them lose their last seven wickets for 53 runs and were bowled out for 233. Jofra Archer (3/47) and Gus 50 ballred, Jasprison and Bumrah’s unbeaten 20 helped India through 230-run.England’s chase started badly as Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Ben Duckett with the first ball of the innings before Prasidh Krishna reduced the hosts to 8/2. However, Joe Root fueled the run with a superb 99 off 133 balls*, receiving valuable support from Will Jacks (30), Sam Curran (26) and *Gus Atkinson (23)**. Atkinson crossed the line to seal a four-wicket win, leaving Root one wicket short of a century. The result left the three-match ODI series 1-1, with the decider to be played at Lord’s on July 19.
