Every year, thousands of engineering graduates across India prepare for campus internships in the hope of landing a high-paying corporate job. For most, receiving an acceptance letter is the ultimate reward after four years of hard work.But three engineering students from Chennai have a different vision for their future.Instead of joining a multinational company, Vignesh M, Vibhakar Senthil and Karthikeyan B decided to put their engineering skills to work solving one of the toughest challenges faced by Indian soldiers serving on the world’s highest battlefield – the Siachen Glacier.Their decision has now led to the creation of an indigenous unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) designed to reduce the physical burden on soldiers serving in some of the harshest conditions on earth.

A class project turns into a mission

The three friends studied mechatronics engineering at SRM University in Chennai. In their first year, they join a robotics project that encourages students to identify real-world problems and develop practical engineering solutions.Over the next few years, they built surveillance robots, designed a single-seat solar car, and entered several national innovation competitions.While many classmates were preparing for interviews, the three of them had found different purposes.They hope to develop technologies that will enhance India’s defense capabilities.Instead of accepting corporate offers, they continued research on autonomous robotics and interacted extensively with officials from the Indian Armed Forces and Army Design Directorate to understand the operational challenges on the ground.

Why Siachen inspired them

Siachen was unlike other battlefields.It is located at an altitude where the oxygen content is almost half that of sea level and the temperature can drop below -50 degrees Celsius, testing human endurance and military logistics every day.In these extreme conditions, soldiers often carry loads in excess of 60 kilograms, including weapons, food supplies, communications equipment and survival gear.The three believe technology can shoulder some of the burden.

In 2019, after nearly three years of research and field interactions, engineers founded Torus Robotics in Chennai.Rather than importing existing technology, they chose to build everything from scratch.One of their biggest achievements is the development of an indigenous electric motor that is approximately 50% lighter, 15% more efficient and 10% more cost-effective compared to similar imported alternatives.Reducing reliance on imported defense technology, especially key powertrain components, has become one of the company’s main goals.

Robots built for the battlefield

The result of years of engineering is the MARS UGV, a fully electric unmanned ground vehicle designed for military operations.The vehicle can be operated remotely from up to one kilometer away and has a six-degree-of-freedom robotic arm capable of detecting and safely disposing of explosive devices.The company is also working with BEML to develop a logistics model capable of transporting heavy supplies at high altitudes, reducing the physical burden on soldiers.If deployed widely, such systems could significantly ease the pressure on workers in places like Siachen.

Recognition of independent innovation

The startup’s work has attracted national attention.Torus Robotics has supplied MARS UGV to DRDO, received innovation funding from the Government of India and Government of Tamil Nadu, and was recognized by iDEX (Innovation for Defense Excellence) as the youngest defense startup to provide indigenous unmanned ground vehicles to the Indian defense ecosystem.The company also won the Birla Global Innovation Challenge 2020, further validating its work in the defense technology space.

More than just engineering, it’s a lesson in purpose
