New Delhi: US President Donald Trump wants FIFA president Gianni Infantino to be the next secretary-general of the United Nations, according to a report by the New York Post. The report said Trump was impressed with Infantino’s preparation FIFA World Cup and they believe that the Swiss leader has the power to unite people around the world.
Trump backs Infantino for top UN post
According to the report, Trump believes Infantino could be a potential contender to replace UN Secretary-General António Guterres, whose term expires in December.A source close to Trump told the New York Post: “He is respected by everyone around the world, and they recognize that he has a unique ability to bring people together.”However, it remains unclear whether Infantino is interested in the role or whether Trump has discussed the matter with him.To become the next UN secretary-general, the candidate must first be supported by the 15 members of the UN Security Council, of which five permanent members have voting power, before being approved by the UN General Assembly.
Trump and Infantino became very close during the World Cup
The report said Infantino and Trump developed a close relationship while working together on this year’s FIFA World Cup.Infantino is said to have made a special effort to include Mr Trump at the game and presented him with the FIFA Peace Prize in December.
The World Cup finals attracted Trump and Infantino
Trump and Infantino were also on display at the FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina.Trump arrived at the Marine One stadium and watched the game in the VIP section alongside Infantino. According to The Guardian newspaper, he received a dispersal relief after appearing in the stadium’s main shows before the start.There was a post-match scene where Trump and Infantino entered the stadium to protest after Spain’s 1-0 win.Things got even more tense when Trump remained on stage after presenting the trophy, appearing to join the Spanish celebrations before leaving the stage.
The relationship is being evaluated
Trump’s close relationship with Infantino came under scrutiny earlier in the tournament after American forward Folarin Balogun was suspended for one match due to a red card in the Round of 16 match against Belgium.
