Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni said his side’s 3-1 extra-time victory over Switzerland in the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup on Sunday showed how comfortable they are in dealing with adversity.Scaloni said staying calm during difficult times has been one of the team’s greatest strengths.“We knew we were going to struggle, and this is part of our blood, this is part of our DNA, and this brings peace of mind,” the coach said.Argentina’s road to the semifinals has not been easy. They twice gave the lead to Cape Verde before winning 3-2 in the round of 32. Against Egypt, they trailed 2-0 until the 79th minute before completing a comeback.Scaloni believes that winning the 2022 World Cup in Qatar has helped his players overcome adversity.“In Qatar, we were not very experienced, including myself, and such conditions were very difficult,” he said.“However, now we are more experienced because we know what it’s like to be dominated by the opposition, to concede an equal goal, so today we remained calm. The team knew how to stay calm and, of course, we will not give up.”Switzerland pulled one back in the 67th minute and looked likely to take the game further, but goals from Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez deep in extra time sealed Argentina’s place in the last four.Scaloni praised Switzerland for making life difficult for his team.“He was a tough opponent,” Scaloni said. “It was difficult to win duels, to put more than five or six passes.“They were very strong, and they fought one-on-one in different positions. We suffered a lot. “The Argentine coach also highlighted the results of his replacements and the strength of the squad.“We also have players on the bench who can turn the game on its head, and that’s a great thing,” he said. “In the end, we always get answers.”Scaloni said the team’s unity has helped him a lot in his World Cup campaign.“This is thanks to the players because they had to trust the way it happened,” he said. “We are one team. We are together. We are very united. And this is proof that football is difficult.”He also praised Alexis Mac Allister, who scored Argentina’s first goal with a header from Lionel Messi’s corner.“Alexis McAllister is one of the seniors. So everyone praises him because he has been working very hard,” said Scaloni. The win sent Argentina to the semifinals for the sixth time in their last six major tournaments.“I never thought about it, but this is something to be proud of,” he said.Scaloni concluded by saying that difficult times are part of any successful World Cup campaign.“When you reach the semi-final, you have to struggle,” Scaloni said. “You have to go through it.”
