Fresh off the spectacular success of ‘Dhurandhar. The Revenge’, filmmaker Aditya Dhar may soon take on another high-profile project. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed that he has approached the director to helm a biopic on the legendary Ahom commander Lachit Borphukan. According to the Chief Minister, discussions on Dhar have already begun, with the vision of making a Hindi film that introduces the Assamese hero’s legacy to audiences around the world.

Speaking during a Facebook Live session on Thursday, Himanta Biswa Sarma praised Dhar’s filmmaking abilities while explaining why he was chosen for the proposed venture. Talking about the filmmaker’s recent blockbuster, he said, “The film Dhurandhar was a big hit. Aditya Dhar is the director and he is one of the most recognizable names among his contemporaries,” PTI quoted him as saying.Sarma added that the government wants to showcase the extraordinary life of Lachit Borphukan through a grand cinematic adaptation. “I think if our government can make a film on Lachit Borphukan, we can introduce his heroes to the whole world. And, it will be a special achievement for us,” he said.The Prime Minister also shared that the initial conversations with Dhar were encouraging. He expects the director to visit Assam in August for more detailed discussions about the film’s scope and creative direction.At the same time, Sarma clarified that the project will go ahead even if Dhar is directing it. “If Aditya Dhar is not able to direct the film, we will approach other directors. The aim is to ensure that a grand biopic of Lachit Borphukan is made,” he said.The proposed film is part of a wider initiative by the Assam government to promote the state’s rich historical heritage through cinema. In the 2026-27 Budget presented on July 10, the government announced plans to support films based on the life of Lachit Borphukan and freedom fighter Kushal Konwar.

The heritage of Lachit Borphukan

Lachit Borphukan is revered as one of the greatest military leaders of Assam. He gained lasting recognition after leading the Ahom forces to victory over the Mughal Empire in the historic Battle of Saraighat in 1671, halting Mughal expansion in the region. Despite battling serious illness during the campaign, her leadership and courage have made her an enduring symbol of patriotism, with her memory honored each year through the Lachit Divas.As of now, Aditya Dhar has not officially announced his next directorial venture after the blockbuster success of ‘Dhurandhar. The Revenge’.
