The first trailer for Marvel Studios’ Avengers. Doomsday gives fans their first look at Robert Downey Jr. as Victor Von Doom aka, Doctor Doom. Aside from the character’s looks and powers raising eyebrows online, netizens have also noticed his distinctive new and ‘unrecognizable’ accent as he returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a super villain.
Doctor Doom’s dialogue grabs attention
The trailer opens with Doctor Doom giving a chilling warning, “Before this day is over, we will be faced with an unthinkable decision.” Many viewers noticed that Downey Jr. appears to have drastically changed his tone and speaking style for this new role which is nothing compared to his previous turn as Tony Stark.
Fans are divided on RDJ’s new sound
The show prompted mixed reactions on social media. Some fans were immediately impressed by the actor’s distinctive voice, while others were not convinced. One user wrote, “RDJ’s Dr. Doom voice is amazing. Can’t even tell he’s under the mask.” Others echoed the sentiment, praising Downey Jr. to distance the character from Iron Man.However, not everyone is convinced.Another fan commented, “RDJ’s Doom voice isn’t as bad as I thought but he wouldn’t do it in the first place.”However, there are others who remain unconvinced about the accent and recasting.
‘Tropic Thunder’ clip goes viral
Adding fuel to the buzz of the actor’s new accent, fans turned to a 2008 interview from the ‘Tropic Thunder’ promotional tour, which claimed that Downey Jr. experimented with the accent nearly two decades ago. The clip, taken from the famous Unscripted conversation with Robert Downey Jr., Ben Stiller and Jack Black, shows the star speaking in an exaggerated European-style accent that many believe is similar to his voice in Doctor Doom.During the interview, Downey Jr. quipped, “Tony Stark, the ultimate mass murderer,” prompting laughter from his co-stars. The video quickly went viral on social media, with one fan jokingly posting, “This must have convinced Kevin Feige to cast RDJ as Doctor Doom.”
