Director: Cheran: has another feather in his cap now as he has been elected as the new president of the South Indian Film Writers’ Association. The filmmaker won the election held by the association in Chennai and got the confidence of majority of the voting members. His victory heralded a new beginning for the writers’ body, electing a new set of office-bearers to lead the association for the coming term.
Cheran defeated the VC Work: with a strong vote margin
The election, held at the Film Musicians’ Association Hall in Vadapalani, voting took place from 8 am to 4 pm. According to The Hindu, Cheran, representing the ‘Namma K. Bhagyaraj’ panel, defeated VC Guhanathan of the ‘Thiraikkathai Mannan K. Bhagyaraj’ panel in the race for the post of president. Cheran got an impressive 279 votes out of 432 votes, and Guhanathan got 155 votes. The victory confirmed Cheran as the new president of the South Indian Film Writers Association with a convincing margin.
The election will see healthy participation and sweep of the team
The election saw enthusiastic participation from association members, who came out in large numbers to exercise their franchise. Apart from the post of president, elections were held for 21 positions, including vice presidents, general secretary, treasurer and joint secretary. Cheran’s panel had a successful outing with Samuthirakani and Snekan also elected as vice presidents. There was a brief dispute over the voting rights of the disqualified members before the poll, but the election process ended peacefully before the counting of votes later in the evening.
Cheran continues to balance cinema and directorial responsibilities
The win is expected to see Cheran play a bigger role in addressing the concerns of screenwriters and strengthening the association in the coming years. Apart from his administrative work, the National Award-winning filmmaker is still active in Tamil cinema. Cheran is recognized for his ability to tell an emotional story through movies like ‘Autograph,’ ‘Thavamai Thavamirundhu,’ and ‘Pokkisham.’Over the years, Cheran has collaborated with actors including Sneha, Mallika, Parthiban, Padmapriya, Saranya Ponvannan, and technicians / musicians including Bharadwaj, Sabesh Murali, Ilaiyaraaja, and others.
