Commonwealth Games 2026 Update: India looking to build on Jhandu Kumar’s bronze on Day 3

Speed, confidence and qualification kick in as India begin Day 3 of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after a day of celebration and heartbreak. The biggest moment came from para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar, whose bronze medal in the men’s heavyweight event earned India its first medal of the Games. His success was made even more remarkable by the difficulties he overcame, turning years of perseverance into a memorable end.

Day 2, however, was also a matter of fine margins. Ashok Malik narrowly missed out on a medal by finishing fourth in para powerlifting, while para swimmer Karthik Budigina narrowly missed out on the podium after finishing fourth in the 100m freestyle S13 event. Swimmer Srihari Nataraj’s campaign ended in the semi-finals, but boxer Jadumani Singh made sure there was plenty of good news by entering the pre-quarterfinals with one win.

India’s lawn bowls team continued to impress as Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki Singh claimed back-to-back wins in the women’s doubles event, while Putul Sonowal showed a spirited display to register his second consecutive victory in the men’s doubles. Their consistent performances have quietly emerged as one of India’s brightest stories in Glasgow so far.

The focus now shifts to another busy day with events in gymnastics, boxing, bowls, swimming and the Indian women’s 3×3 wheelchair basketball team at the Games. Boxer Sachin Siwach begins his campaign in the men’s 60kg category, the women’s gymnastics team looks to be on the upswing, and the lawn bowlers look to continue their unbeaten run. While Day 3 may not offer many guaranteed medal chances, it does promise a number of important contests that could shape India’s campaign in the days to come.
