England captain Harry Kane refused to confirm whether FIFA World Cup 2026 was his last appearance on football’s biggest stage, and he is sure to be close to making a decision after his team exited in the semifinals against Argentina. England’s dream of reaching the World Cup finals since 1966 came to a dramatic end after the defending champions fought back to win 2-1 on Wednesday (local time). The defeat saw Argentina through to Sunday’s final against Spain, with the Three Lions now facing France in the third round. Speaking in a video shared with DAZN Football on X after the game, Kane said that he has no intention of making any immediate decisions about his international future and will instead evaluate things one at a time. “I’m too late to talk about it. You know me as a person, it always takes year by year and how I feel. And, look, the England national team is proud of my happiness, it’s what I like to do more, more than anything. Obviously, four years is a long time and I’m 33 years old in the summer, but as you can see at one level, I’m still doing it, with Leo, Messis is still there, I’m still doing it at another level. I don’t want to put limits on these things, I’ll deal with every challenge as it comes, but for now I’m just preparing for another loss with this team,” Kane said. England set their sights on an emphatic victory after Anthony Gordon put them ahead in the 55th minute, finishing off Morgan Rogers’ pass after a cagey first half. However, the threat changed as England fell back into a deep defensive line, allowing Argentina to dictate the offense. Jordan Pickford pulled off a couple of crucial saves and Alexis Mac Allister hit the post before the pressure was on. With five minutes to go, Enzo Fernandez brought in Argentina after being selected Lionel Messi. In stoppage time, Messi turned in another assist, sending home a cross that Lautaro Martinez headed home to complete a stunning turnaround and send the hosts into another World Cup final. England now face France in the third round, while Argentina face Spain in Sunday’s final.
