‘Krishnavataram’ actress Sanskruti Jayanagrandson of Anandiben Patel, the Governor of Uttar Pradesh and former Chief Minister of Gujarat recently welcomed the audience to his unique heritage home in Gujarat. More than a luxury residence, the property stands as a tribute to India’s various handicraft traditions, with almost every element handcrafted by master craftsmen. From intricately designed wall prints and handmade cushions to bedspreads, table runners and decorative pieces, every corner of the home reflects exceptional craftsmanship. Sanskruti revealed that many of the artworks displayed throughout the residence took months and in some cases, even years to complete.
A traditional haveli built around family and craft
The house follows the layout of a classic Gujarati haveli, centered around a courtyard that keeps the family connected through the floors. In a tour of the house with Mashable India, Sanskruti explained that her parents wanted the design to reflect this openness, with corridors connecting the levels so that “even someone standing upstairs can be a part of the conversations happening below.”The actress says, “My parents’ vision was to build the house like a traditional Gujarati haveli. Every Gujarati house has a central courtyard where the family gathers. The floors are connected by open corridors, so even one standing upstairs can be a part of the conversations happening below.”That sense of connection also extends to the home’s decor, much of which is handmade as a direct result of her mother’s decades-long relationship with artisans across the country. “My mother has been working with artisans in the field of handicrafts for the past 25 years. I grew up around them. Every item in this house is handmade,” shares Sanskruti.
The wall of wisdom, inspirational quotes, and Kachchi-inspired design
A unique feature is a dedicated wall honoring the leaders who shaped India, which the family calls “the wall of wisdom.” Everywhere, inspirational quotes are woven into walls, corridors and outdoor walkways throughout the property, meant to inspire anyone who passes by. The walls of the house also carry design elements inspired by Kachchi border embroidery, lending the space a distinctly Gujarati visual identity, along with scriptures, small artwork, and vintage wedding paraphernalia also used as decorative pieces.
Sustainable by design and a nod to his grandfather ‘Mr Toilet’
Sustainability runs through the house’s DNA. Sanskruti describes the property as built for “conscious living,” focusing on rainwater harvesting, solar power, and other eco-friendly practices woven into everyday life. That ethos also shows up in unexpected places, even the bathrooms have individual color themes, inspirational quotes, and mini libraries, a detail Sanskruti links back to her grandfather, who she says was “known as ‘Mr Toilet'” after winning a Padma Shri for his work in sanitation.“Our house is made for conscious living. It is completely eco-friendly. We harvest rainwater, use solar panels for electricity and follow practices that help us coexist with nature,” said Sanskruti.
Open kitchens, a pizza oven and the ‘gratitude walk’
The home’s open kitchen flows into a dining and outdoor seating space, ideal for the rainy months, while a separate outdoor kitchen area hosts family gatherings, cooking sessions and bonfires including, as Sanskruti points out, family pizza nights thanks to a dedicated pizza oven on the property.Perhaps the most distinctive space is the “Gratitude Walk,” a pathway lined with inscriptions expressing gratitude to nature, the five elements, and life itself, designed to encourage meditation. The property also includes dedicated meditation and yoga spaces, rounding out its focus on mindful living.
