Indian captain Shubman Gill retired after injuring his right leg as India chased down 259 in the first ODI against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham, on Tuesday.Gill was hitting 80 off 75 balls when he faced trouble in the 26th hour of the innings. Faced with a full out from Josh Tongue who won the edge, the Indian skipper removed his gloves, knelt on the pitch and grabbed the back of his right leg before deciding to leave the pitch.The injury happened after Gill and Shreyas Iyer added a 100-run stand to set India in control of the chase. Washington Sundar came in as a substitute batter.England soon came back in the next round. Shreyas Iyer was dismissed after a quick and sharp mix from Harry Brook.Washington Sundar pushed a delivery from Jofra Archer to mid-on, which got Iyer to run. Running towards the batsman’s end, Iyer changed his direction to avoid being hit by the ball, which cost him valuable time. Brook picked the ball well and hit the stumps directly, catching Iyer just short of his reach.Earlier, Joe Root and Liam Dawson rescued England with a 121-run stand for the seventh wicket to help the hosts post 258 in the first ODI.England cruised to 61 without loss before India started a collapse that left them 107 for 6 by the 22nd over. Root scored 76 off 76 balls, while Dawson made a brilliant 68 off 83 balls as the pair built up an innings to take England to 258.
