Shubman Gill continued his excellent record at Edgbaston with a brilliant 80 as India defeated England by six wickets in the first ODI at Edgbaston on Tuesday to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.Gill also delivered at the venue where he scored 269 and 161 in India’s Test win last year. Gill also tied the innings with vice-captain Shreyas Iyer, adding 101 runs for the third wicket.Gill looked to improve throughout his innings, hitting 11 fours and a six. He tried to attack cautiously, playing drives through the sides and pulling Josh Limame for a six. However, physical ailments marred his innings, with a calf strain followed by a hamstring problem that forced him out injured in the 80s.As soon as Gill was out, England found their way back into the competition. Iyer, who made 35, was missing, and KL Rahul was later bowled by Tongue.However, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar ensured that there were no further hurdles. The pair put together an unbeaten stand of 102 for the fifth wicket, taking India home in 45.2 overs.Axar, who struggled for runs during the T20I, made an unbeaten 57 off 52 balls, while Washington finished with 52 not out from 63 balls. The pair caught the pace of Jofra Archer and spun well against England’s spinners to complete the chase.The win was India’s first win in their ongoing tour of the United Kingdom.Earlier, Joe Root and Liam Dawson rescued England from defeat with a 121-run partnership for the seventh wicket.England were 61 for no loss in the first 13 overs but slumped to 107 for 6 before Root and Dawson rebuilt the innings. Root scored 76 off 76 balls, while Dawson registered 68 off 83 balls as England posted 258 after electing to bat.Root managed his innings well, attacking Jasprit Bumrah after completing his opener. He hit sixes and sixes, including a blistering shot off Bumrah.Bumrah finished with figures of 1 for 31 in nine overs and was India’s top bowler.
