Kishan, Tilak saves India after initial shock
Zimbabwe struck twice during the powerplay as Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s character took off cheaply.Abhishek gave an easy catch to Ryan Burl off Blessing Muzarabani, while Sooryavanshi, after running for 20 off just nine runs with four boundaries and a six, miscued batsman Richard Ngarava to mid-on.With India under pressure, Ishan Kishan and captain Shreyas Iyer lifted the innings through a 66-run partnership for the third wicket.Kishan found a good partner in Tilak Varma as the pair added 94 runs to defeat Zimbabwe.Kishan scored a brilliant 81, leading his innings well. He reached 31 off 31 balls before going on an incredible run, smashing another 31 runs in just 13 games. His leg-side play took its toll, with Zimbabwe’s bowlers repeatedly punished through the mid-wicket.Tilak did his best with an unbeaten 60 off just 29 balls, quashing recent talk of his tally. The left-hander raced to his fifty in just 23 overs, mixing beautiful fielding and powerful hitting. The pair gifted India 61 runs in the last five overs, which lifted the visitors to 219/5.Speaking during the break, Tilak praised Kishan for setting the tone.“We felt that anything around 200 would be very good here. But if you think about 200, obviously the score can go to 220, especially the way Ishan batted. It was interesting to watch,” said Tilak. The 23-year-old also revealed that discussions with head coaches Gautam Gambhir and VVS Laxman made him focus on scoring runs on the ground rather than relying on aerial shots.“I have been talking with Gautam boss and now with Laxman boss about getting opportunities. If you hit the ground, your consistency will improve. I worked very hard during the break after the England series, and I am happy that it has arrived today,” he added. With another 200-plus added to the ever-growing squad, India’s batting line-up continues to redefine T20I standards.
