Ever since ‘Mirzapur The Movie’ was announced, fans have been curious as to how the hugely popular crime franchise will make the jump from streaming to theaters without losing its trademark intensity. We are trying to manage that and strike the right balance.“
‘Animal’ and ‘Dhurandhar’ changed the theatrical landscape
According to Singh, audiences have become more receptive to mature storytelling in theaters than a few years ago. He believes that the success of recent adult-oriented films has created a space for projects like ‘Mirzapur The Movie’ to stay true to their original tone.“I think the audience has matured,” he said. “If you look at films like ‘Animal,’ ‘Dhurandhar’ and several other recent releases, you can see that adult storytelling has now found a place in cinemas. I think it also set a precedent, which allowed us to bring something like ‘Mirzapur: The Movie’ to the big screen without watering it down.”
Making an extensive series into a feature film
Since its debut on Prime Video in 2018, ‘Mirzapur’ has built a loyal fan base through its mix of crime, power struggles and family feuds. Condemning that vast universe into a theatrical piece required careful creative decisions. Singh explained that the entire team is working together to ensure that the essence of the franchise remains intact while adapting it to a new format.“Everyone is collectively thinking about the film. Everyone is looking out for the film and for each other. If it’s Farhan (Akhtar) and Ritesh (Sidhwani) as producers, we have their experience and vision behind us, making sure we don’t get off track and helping us maintain the right balance.
The scenario continues to evolve
The script, written by the franchise’s creator Puneet Krishna, is subject to constant revision as the team determines what is the appropriate place in the film and what needs to be left out to maintain the focus of the narrative.Reflecting on that process, Singh said, “Puneet, of course, had such good starting points within the film. From there, it became a process of developing the material and there were discussions about how much to keep, how much to leave out, where we should indulge a little and where we should completely cut out of the narrative.”

While longtime followers of the franchise will recognize many beloved characters, Singh explained that audiences should also be prepared for unexpected twists and evolving relationships. “In some places we spoil what the audience already knows. In other places we bring back things they love, but present them in a new way. It’s a balance of the two,” he said.He added, “They will find moments they never expected and also things they want to experience in a new form. We have the fan-favorite elements that people have come to expect, but these characters also do new things in a new story. Even the dynamics between them are changing differently. “
