It’s been more than two decades since one of Bollywood’s finest, Mehmood Ali, left for a heavenly abode. Remembering the great artiste on the occasion of his death anniversary, his nephew Akaar Ali said, “It’s been 22 years since he died, but his spirit lives on. I was 10 years old at that time. It was a rainy afternoon when many people gathered out of respect, duty, and love for me.Bade Chacha!“Mehmood, loved and remembered by many as Bhaijaan.”
Akaar Ali shares his fondest memories of his late uncle Mehmood Ali
Speaking to us exclusively, Akaar further shared, “I have vivid memories of his farewell that day at Mehboob Studio in Bandra. My father, Anwar Ali, played two roles in his brother’s life, as the youngest brother and as his best friend. Both these relationships came with a lot of emotion and responsibility. I have witnessed many such encounters between them, which are ridiculously childlike. Through observation, I can relate.“As he continues, Ali reveals a specific memory, when Mehmood came from America and brought him a special gift. “This is his wooden HEAD tennis racquet, a vintage that is almost 20 years old. At that time, I was playing on the competitive circuit and continued lawn tennis professionally. When I look back, my heart is filled with gratitude as he fueled my passion for the sport then and continues to do so now in the film,” Akaar recalled.

Like millions of Mehmood fans, Akaar Ali also loves watching his uncle’s work on screen. He said, “He is so unpredictable with his performances that you most believe you are on the edge of your seat. There was never a dull moment with Mehmood around. His films are evergreen even today. Many of them are celebrated at family gatherings. My friends and I enjoyed ‘Bombay to Goa’ the most because it took us into a world of its own.““Even now, it’s the sweetest escape. You travel through the lens and become a passenger on a bus. It’s an unforgettable journey, and that, for me, is special. Whether it’s a frame or an entire film, he makes his mark. His performances always add value to the film as a whole. He shows the range and depth through his work and always keeps it interesting for the audience.Highlighting his other performances, Akaar shared, “Right from Ramesh in ‘Parvarish’ to Mahesh the rickshaw-wasa in ‘Kunwara Baap,’ his versatility inspired me. I feel his presence through love, joy, and devotion,” he concluded.
