New Delhi: The Indian gymnastics team for the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya from September 19 to October 4 is facing a controversy over the selection of the women’s technical team after the sports authorities and the Gymnastics Federation of India (GFI) differed on the names of the candidates. At a meeting of the country’s sports officials, officials said that Pranati Nayak and Protistha Samanta had succeeded in replicating what they did in the Asian Championship in South Korea last year, as the latest international conference – which was held in China from June 25-28 – fell outside the selection window that ends on June 20. However, documents accessed by TOI show that the Asian Gymnastics Union (AGU) confirmed the names, Pranati qualified for the vault and Nishka Agarwal got a direct berth in the all-around. The AGU states that these sessions are for athletes and cannot be changed unless the athlete withdraws due to injury or other reasons. Therefore, Nishka’s entry cannot be replaced, while Protistha can compete only if Pranati withdraws from the event. In men, the articles of Yogeshwar Singh and Tapan Mohanti have been accepted by AGU in the round.A GFI official said that the agency had already sent the names of Pranati, Nishka, Yogeshwar and Tapan to the IOA and SAI, but was waiting for the government’s approval before saying more. “We would like to inform you that GFI has already spoken about its official Asian Games team to IOA and SAI for consideration. However, we are yet to receive any confirmation or approval from the authorities concerned,” GFI said.
