West Indies head coach Darren Sammy said the fast bowler Alzarri Joseph ruled himself out of the home series for the two Tests against Pakistan, claiming that the fast bowler refused to be selected despite being selected for the squad.Cricket West Indies had earlier announced that Joseph would miss the series due to personal reasons. Before the opening Test, Sammy gave a detailed account of what had happened.“Yes, it’s a big loss. Father Joseph refused to choose. That’s the reality of the situation,” said Sammy at a press conference on the eve of the opening series.“He was elected. I mean, now he’s coming back from injury. And for reasons from that, he has declined the election. This is a decision that is off the top of my head. I will leave it to the directors to find ways that players with contracts can refuse to choose,” the coach said.Joseph played in both Tests against Sri Lanka in June-July, taking six wickets in the two matches. He also played five ODIs against New Zealand, claiming 4 for 41 in the opening match.Joseph has played 42 Tests for the West Indies and has taken 130 wickets. He has represented the Caribbean side in all three formats.Despite missing one of his fast bowlers, Sammy said he remains confident in the current Pakistan attack.The bowling team includes Shamar Joseph, Kemar Roach, Jayden Seales and all-rounders Justin Greaves and Keemo Paul. Spin duties will be handled by Jomel Warrican, rookie Joshua Bishop and captain Roston Chase.“What I can tell you (is) we have bowlers who we have seen can take 20 wickets. This is the first time we have won a Test match,” said Sammy when asked if West Indies had the strength to face Pakistan.“We saw it in New Zealand. We saw it in the Australian series. We compared Australia to football. We also compared New Zealand to football. And the confidence and the work that the batsmen put in, you can see it bearing fruit in the Test match against Sri Lanka.“You know, consistency is coming. So as soon as we match those two runs scorers, we know we have the bowling team to take 20 wickets and help us win the match,” said Sammy.The first Test starts on Saturday (July 25), while the second Test will be played in Port of Spain from August 2.
