New Zealand got back into the five-match ODI series with a five-wicket win over the West Indies in the second match on Monday. Left-arm spinner Jayden Lennox played the ball, taking 5 for 19 as the visitors bowled out West Indies for just 138 before losing their target with 104 balls to spare.The win was New Zealand’s 400th ODI win and leveled the series at 1-1 after the West Indies won the opener by seven wickets.
Jayden Lennox causes a big fall
West Indies were in a strong position at 63 without loss, but Lennox turned the game around with a brilliant spell. The players lost 10 wickets for just 65 runs to finish on 138.Playing his seventh ODI on international debut at the age of 31, Lennox took five wickets. His figures of 5 for 19 from eight overs were the third highest by a New Zealand spinner in ODI cricket.John Campbell top scored with 43, while Akeem August made 18 in the opening innings. Amir Jangoo added 24, but no other batsman could make an impact as West Indies lost their last five wickets in just 10 overs.Mitchell Santner also struck at a crucial time, removing Keacy Carty for 18 and bringing in a huge change. Lennox then removed captain Shai Hope for seven minutes after the West Indies captain scored an unbeaten 87 in the first ODI.
Latham ties the treacherous chase
Chasing New Zealand was not easy on a pitch that offered a lot of innings. The visitors slipped to 96 for 5 before Tom Latham anchored the innings with an unbeaten 37.Latham and Mark Bracewell, not out on 18, shared an unbroken partnership to take New Zealand home.Henry Nicholls made 17 and Will Young scored 28 in an excellent opening of 35. However, New Zealand suffered a setback when Young was dismissed and Mark Chapman was dismissed for a duck in quick succession.Nicholls departed with the score on 52 for 3 off Daryl Mitchell and Latham added 42 runs for the fourth wicket. Mitchell looked poised to make the chase but stumbled in the 28th minute when he charged down Khary Pierre. Pierre then bowled Dean Foxcroft to put New Zealand down.Latham and Bracewell, who also crossed 1,000 ODI runs during his innings, ensured there were no more distractions as New Zealand finished the chase well.The third match of the five-match ODI will be played in Guyana on Thursday, with both teams looking to take a 2-1 lead.
