Lupita Nyong’o spoke on her casting in: Christopher NolanThe upcoming film ‘The Odyssey’ where she plays Helen of Troy and her sister Clytemnestra. The acclaimed actress joins Nolan’s impressive lineup of actors in the cinematic adaptation of the classical myth taking on the unique challenge of portraying two different characters simultaneously.According to CBR, Nyong’o discussed her involvement in Nolan’s next project. The actress plays the sisters Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra, two women who are driven by their anger at the world around them and the men who rule them. Helen is depicted as married to King Menelaus of Sparta, while Clytemnestra’s story involves her husband Agamemnon. Nyong’o became the first actor to play both of these sisters in an adaptation of Homer’s classical poem.
Lupita Nyong’o’s reaction to the dual casting
Nyong’o expressed genuine surprise at being chosen for the roles. “I was stunned when Chris told me that he wanted me to play these two iconic characters. The goal for me was to try and make differences internally. And I think that’s another thing about working with Chris. He’s really interested in the interiority. That then, hopefully, comes through in the film,” he explained.

The actress took up the challenge by emphasizing the construction of internal characteristics that would create a difference between the two siblings, even if performed by the same actor. His insight into Nolan’s direction focused more on the internal than the external aspects of the characters’ differences.
Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra exploration of war and anger
Nyong’o spoke about the film’s themes and the issue of war and its impact on everyone involved. “I think this movie is a lot about the cost of war for everyone. Those who go to war, those who stay behind, or those who cause war. For these two women, they experience this time very differently. “Their anger is a product of their unique experiences,” he said. The two sisters represent different views of the consequences of the Trojan War and its consequences. While their anger stems from different experiences, both women channel their emotions in response to the pain they endure, creating complex depictions of mythological figures.
The importance of Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra as mythological roles
The film brings to life a myth that has been taught in educational settings for centuries. The story, first presented as an oral poem has been experienced by most modern audiences through written works attributed to Homer despite scholarly uncertainty as to whether Homer actually existed as a historical figure.

Previous film adaptations have featured Helen of Troy, with actress Diane Kruger portraying the mythical figure in a 2004 film directed by Wolfgang Petersen. However, the legend surrounding Helen has historically overshadowed the story of Clytemnestra because Helen’s narrative is more romanticized in cultural memory. Helen became known as a woman whose beauty sparked the Trojan War when Paris, Prince of Troy, brought her to town. This event sets in motion a series of events that bring Odysseus and his men to the shores of Troy.
Christopher Nolan’s approach to classical narrative
Nolan’s interpretation of ‘The Odyssey’ does not necessarily relate the events leading up to the Trojan War that are explored in Homer’s ‘The Iliad’ along with the myth of Achilles. Instead the film depicts Helen at a different stage in her life that diverges from the audience’s expectations formed by the traditional interpretation of the myth.In history, Helen of Troy is depicted as a person with whom men fight and compete. However, Nyong’o’s dual portrayal of Helen and Clytemnestra emphasizes their anger and rage that transforms them into fascinating characters with agency and emotional depth. This reimagining shows Nolan’s trust in his actors to bring unique interpretations to the classic story being told.
