Argentina’s Facundo Tello will referee the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup between France and Morocco, attracting attention for his strict style and controversial game in 2022 where he showed 10 red cards. FIFA’s decision has also caused controversy because the entire team of the game is owned by Argentina.Tello rose to prominence after the Argentine Super Cup clash between Boca Juniors and Racing Club, where he handed out 10 red cards following several brawls and violent confrontations. The match had to be abandoned after Boca had less than seven players, which is against the rules.Since becoming a player in 2012, Tello has issued more than 2,000 yellow cards and more than 75 red cards. At this World Cup, he has already overseen two group games, showing five yellow cards in Canada’s match against Bosnia and two in the win over South Africa and South Korea. France’s Michael Olise will also need to avoid a booking, as another yellow card could see him out of the semi-final.FIFA confirmed that Tello, along with his assistants, Juan Pablo Belatti and Gabriel Chade, will preside over the final stage, making it the first match at the 2026 World Cup to have a panel of Argentine referees. Defender Dayot Upamecano said, “I am not focusing on who the judge will be. We have not done this before, we will focus on Morocco.”Goalkeeper Robin Risser also supported the officials saying, “There have been some pains for a few years now since the final, but it is part of the game. If these opponents are there, it is because they have reached the level of the competition.”
