England is progressing Jofra Archer believes English bowling is a return to “normal cricket” after the batting environment and short boundaries of the Indian Premier League (IPL), issuing a stark warning to India’s young batting line-up following their defeat in the third T20I series.Archer’s comments came after England dismissed India by 125 runs at Trent Bridge, bowling the visitors out for just 76 in pursuit of 202. The Barbados-born quickly returned figures of 3/29, while Josh Tongue took 4/38 as England took a 2-0 lead in the five-match series after the opener was washed out.
‘Here, your margin of error is huge’
Asked how his plans against Indian batsmen differed from those in the IPL, Archer said English conditions allow bowlers to stick to traditional methods rather than worrying about small streams.“I think it goes back to the culture here. You try to throw the ball straight at a good length. Whereas there, because the wickets are easy and the margins are small, you have to be really, really special. Here, I feel your margin of error is a little bit bigger,” said Archer.Archer also said that England always felt that 201 would be enough, unlike in the IPL where even 200-plus totals are often chased down.“In the IPL, sometimes 200 is not safe. With 200 on the board on the wicket, I don’t want to say we were confident, but I felt it would have taken a special innings to chase them,” he added.He praised the England bowling team for giving it together.“I’m glad everyone chipped in. Everyone who bowled got wickets today, so it was a good performance,” he said.
‘It is even now’ against Sooryavanshi
One of the biggest debates remained Archer’s battle with Rajasthan Royals teammate Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.The 15-year-old announced himself by hitting Archer for a six on the first ball of his T20I match in Manchester. At Trent Bridge, however, Archer responded strongly, dismissing the youngster with a sharp 145 kmph drive after Sooryavanshi scored 13.Joking about the growing competition, Archer said: “Well, I think it’s here.Archer also toyed with the idea that the fast pace had hampered India.“No, not really. I think we all shot well in Manchester. None of us have wickets to show there, so we are happy that we have something today,” he said.He added that discipline was more important than speed, and said: “I don’t think it was fast, to be honest. It could have been a little fast, but there was a strong wind, so I honestly didn’t feel that I was out of control.”India, led by Shreyas Iyer in the World Cup transition, are looking for their first T20I win after replacing Suryakumar Yadav as captain. They will look to keep the series alive when the fourth T20I will be played in Bristol on Thursday before Southampton on Saturday.
