After months of legal battles, certification delays, piracy leaks and endless speculation, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay’s ‘Jana Nayagan’ has finally received clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The film was given an A certificate, ending one of the longest and most controversial censor processes in recent Tamil cinema. Its certified runtime is 3 hours and 3 minutes.Though the CBFC certificate has been uploaded on the board’s official website, the detailed list of cut-offs is yet to be made public. According to industry reports, Vijay’s much-awaited farewell film is likely to hit the theaters on July 23 or July 24. The makers are yet to officially announce the release date.Initially, ‘Jana Nayagan’ was slated to release on January 9 ahead of the Pongal festival and just a few months before Vijay’s first electoral contest. The film was submitted to the CBFC on December 19, 2025, but instead of receiving certification within the usual timeframe, it was caught in an unusually long approval process. The review committee initially asked the makers to implement some changes. After the requested changes were made and the film was resubmitted, the producers said they were informed that the film was deemed suitable for a U/A certificate. However, the certification process hit another hurdle after one of the members of the review committee reportedly filed an internal objection, claiming that some parts of the film hurt public sentiments. After the complaint, the process was stopped, and the makers were advised to submit the film to the revising committee. At the same time, unconfirmed reports suggested that the film’s release could influence Vijay’s political prospects ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, scheduled for April 23.On January 6, production banner KVN Productions moved the Madras High Court, seeking directions to expedite the certification process. While the delay ranged from weeks to months, the producers argued before the court that the long wait put the planned release at risk. Legal intervention, however, did not immediately break the deadlock. After nearly a month and proceedings that reached the Supreme Court, KVN Productions eventually withdrew its petition and chose to send the film to the revising committee.
The ‘Jana Nayagan’ leak fueled the controversy
The controversy further escalated in April when a high-definition version of ‘Jana Nayagan’ surfaced online even before the film received CBFC certification.Tamil Nadu Police later arrested several individuals in connection with the leak, including a freelance film editor. During subsequent proceedings before the Madras High Court, prosecutors revealed that the pirated copy was reportedly viewed by nearly 1.2 crore people before the authorities succeeded in blocking access to it.Investigators allege that the leaked version was assembled using footage copied from an editing facility before being distributed on piracy websites. Meanwhile, the speculations surrounding the movie only intensified on social media.Just a few days ago, a fake CBFC certificate claiming that ‘Jana Nayagan’ had been issued a certificate went viral online. The X account that shared the document later admitted it was fake. It was later discovered that the fake certificate was created by altering the censor certificate of Vijay’s ‘Leo’, further fueling confusion among fans.Rumors about the release date also gained momentum after overseas distributors announced a premiere on July 24. Some reports suggest that the makers are considering a July 23 release depending on their final strategy. Canadian exhibitor York Cinemas even announced the July 24 overseas release before KVN Productions made any official announcement. Now that the certification process is finally over, attention has shifted to KVN Productions, which is expected to formally announce the theatrical release date soon.Directed by H Vinoth, ‘Jana Nayagan’ features Vijay along with Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev MenonPrakash Raj and Narain. Widely considered to be Vijay’s last film before his full-time career in politics, the project generated incredible anticipation, with the seven-month certification saga becoming one of the most talked about episodes in recent Tamil cinema.
