India’s Commonwealth Games athletes suffered a setback on the opening day of the Glasgow 2026 Games, with judoka Arun Kumar disqualified from the competition after failing a dope test.The 73kg judoka has been declared ineligible following the findings of an in-competition test conducted by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA). His omission reduces the Indian batsmen from 125 to 124.Arun was one of India’s judo medalists after rising rapidly in the junior and senior categories. Studying at the Inspire Institute of Sport, he won gold at the Macau Junior Asia Cup 2023, followed by another gold at the 2025 Taipei Asian Open and bronze at the Hong Kong Asian Open. Earlier this year, he also finished seventh at the prestigious Tashkent Grand Slam, and was selected for the Commonwealth Games.Arun’s withdrawal comes despite an anti-doping test conducted before the Games. Indian athletes were tested twice before leaving for Glasgow, while those training overseas were tested in coordination with the anti-doping agencies of the host countries.Such caution followed recent doping scandals, particularly in weightlifting, where several Indian lifters tested positive before the Games, reducing the country’s total from 16 to 12.Along with NADA, the Athletics Integrity Unit and the country’s sports federations monitored the athletes and educated them on anti-doping rules before the Games.India initially fielded 126 players who played in Glasgow. Following recent withdrawals, including Arun Kumar’s, the national team has been reduced to 124 contestants.
