Indian captain Shubman Gill has mangled the future of One-day Internationals, insisting the 50-over format should remain untouched while suggesting a return to the triangular or quadrangular series to make bilateral cricket more interesting.Speaking on the eve of the first ODI against England at Edgbaston, Gill dismissed suggestions of reducing the format to 40 and said the 50-over World Cup remains the pinnacle of ODI cricket.“I think, for me, I mean, I grew up watching 50-over cricket a lot, and it’s still an important part of my childhood, whenever I think about it. When I think about the World Cup, the first thing that comes to my mind is the 50-over World Cup. So, in that sense, for me, the most famous World Cup, if someone wants to win it, will be the 50-over World Cup. So, I don’t think it should be 40.”Instead of changing the format, Gill believes that introducing multi-format games more frequently would make ODI cricket more attractive to both players and fans.“One thing is that we used to play the Triangular Series very much, and it was fun to watch. You know, India used to play in Australia, India-Australia-Sri Lanka. So, I think, maybe, if we get a chance to play a Triangular Series, because two teams are playing in different places. So, if we get a chance to play, it will be interesting. So, you are not playing with two different teams, I think you are playing with two different teams. If we want to make this tournament more interesting, instead of having two countries in the Triangular Series, maybe Quadrangular Series, I don’t know, if we’re going to do something that’s going to be fun to play and watch.“India will begin the three-match ODI series looking to bounce back from the disappointing bowling that saw them lose 2-0 to Ireland before losing 4-0 in the T20I series against England.Gill also praised the Indian women’s team after their 270-second win against England in the first women’s Test at Lord’s.“I think it’s a very proud moment for us, our women’s team has won a historic match at Lord’s. And I think we’ve all seen how special it is, playing on this stage. How special it is to play there and how special it is to win there. So, thank you very much to them. “Looking ahead, Gill revealed that he has already started preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa in talks with Virat Kohli about the proper structure of this group.“We (he is Kohli) talks (on the net) about integration. What combination would be best for SA? Which players may not be in the team right now, but could help us in the future?“Which bowlers are there? What all-rounders are there? What spinners are there? So, we were talking about all that.”Gill also received the return of Jasprit Bumrahwho has rejoined the ODI squad after being rested to manage his career following IPL 2026.“Bumrah is coming into the setup after a while. And hopefully, he has had a few overs leading up to this one-day series.“And we hope, this one-day series is going well and we hope to win the series and reach the climax,” he added.
