Kunal Kemmu: spoke candidly about the unpredictable nature of an acting career, admitting that long periods of downtime and creative compromises are realities most actors have to deal with. The actor, who won acclaim for his directorial debut ‘Madgaon Express’ and was recently seen hosting Prime Video’s reality series ‘The Alliance’, reflected on the constant struggle to balance artistic fulfillment with professional survival.Kunal said that actors are often forced to choose between waiting for meaningful roles and accepting projects just to stay active.“Sometimes you’re faced with the challenge of thinking, ‘I’ve never felt creatively fulfilled or fulfilled doing this piece.’ But at the end of the day, I haven’t worked for a long time, so I’m just me because, in the end, I’m trying to do what I need to do. I think that’s something that most actors struggle with, especially if you don’t have enough work or there’s not enough work around. There is always a clash between what you want to do and the opportunities that are in front of you,” Kunal said in an interview to News18. Expanding on the dilemma, the actor explained that every performer eventually has to decide whether to wait for the perfect opportunity or take advantage of everything that comes their way.“Don’t you just do it and wait until you get what you want? Or do you say, ‘Okay, let me make the best of what I have, even if it’s not creative 100% for me?’ For me, I’ve always been somebody who really needs to connect with the work and enjoy it, because the only reason I became an actor, now I’m doing other things, because acting brings me joy and makes me happy. So I chose not to do anything else and just go with it, and I know what’s in it. So yeah, that’s the only bit, I think, that’s challenging for me, and I know it’s the same for a lot of other actors.When asked if he ever went through jobless periods, Kunal said that such ups and downs are a recurring part of an actor’s life and can come back at any stage of a career.“No, it happens all the time. I mean, now I’m more busy. But there were times in my life when I went for almost two years where I was working. Then a film doesn’t work, and sometimes I’m at home for six months, eight months, or even a year. And that episode may return. “Kunal also revealed that despite repeated advice from industry insiders, he never believed in relying too much on public relations or networking to advance his career. However, he preferred to stay true to his instincts.“It’s just that it didn’t work for me. The advice is that you need to do a lot of PR and really have the PR machinery behind you, which is very important. Or even showing up places, being in the right circles, hosting people, or sending gifts. I don’t think this is bad advice. It just doesn’t matter to me because it never did. I’m a man of nature, and I do what I feel is right.”Emphasizing that skill ultimately matters more than visibility, the actor said he has always focused on getting better at his craft rather than seeking popularity.“And I really believe in working your craft more than anything else. Because if you’re a craftsman and someone needs you, it’s like a carpenter, right? If I need a good table made, I’ll find a good carpenter. I can’t find the most famous carpenter.”
